🍝 Light tuna pasta bake

Published 6 August 2026 · Johannes P.

A practical tuna pasta bake made from familiar cupboard ingredients and divided into four portions.

A cupboard meal with a clear calculation

Tuna pasta bake is useful when fresh ingredients are running low. Pasta, canned tuna, crushed tomatoes and frozen peas are easy to keep available. That makes the recipe a realistic backup meal rather than something that depends on a perfect shopping trip. Reliable backup meals helped me avoid impulsive choices during my own weight loss.

I drain tuna before weighing it because the liquid is not part of the finished meal. The label may state values for the drained product or the whole contents, so I check the wording. Tuna in oil can also be used, but its energy value and drained weight should be entered instead of copying the value for tuna in water.

Keep the pasta slightly firm

The pasta continues cooking in the oven. I stop boiling it while it still has some firmness, otherwise the finished bake can become soft and heavy. The tomato and cooking cream provide moisture, but brands differ in thickness. If the mixture looks dry before baking, a small amount of pasta water can be added.

Cheese is measured instead of scattered from the packet. A modest layer gives flavour and browning without hiding the rest of the dish. There is nothing wrong with using more, but the amount should match the calculation. I take the same approach with oil, sauce and toppings throughout RestinCal.

Storage, reheating and substitutions

Cool leftovers promptly and refrigerate them in covered containers. Pasta absorbs sauce during storage, so a reheated portion may feel drier. A spoonful of water stirred in before heating often helps. Reheat until hot throughout and avoid repeatedly warming the full batch.

Peas can be replaced with spinach, sweetcorn or chopped vegetables. Salmon or cooked chicken can replace tuna, but the flavour, allergens and values change. This recipe is practical because its structure is flexible while the logged ingredients remain specific. It is ordinary food, not a shortcut that guarantees weight loss.

Letting the pasta bake settle

I leave the dish to stand for a few minutes after baking. The sauce thickens and the pasta portions separate more cleanly. If the casserole looks dry before it goes into the oven, a little reserved pasta water is a better first adjustment than adding unmeasured cream. The cheese is spread evenly so one portion does not receive most of it.

For storage, I divide the warm casserole into shallow containers and cool it without unnecessary delay. When reheating, I add a spoonful of water and stir the portion halfway through. Tuna, pasta and dairy values come from the stated products, so substitutions should be updated in RestinCal.

The nutrition values use the same ingredient amounts and product values as the Finnish recipe. Brands and the finished weight can change the estimate. Sources reviewed 6 August 2026: Fineli, Finnish Food Authority and EFSA.
