ℹ️ About the food database

The food database is made up of products added to our internal database by the site's users and the developer. The database updates and expands actively, and every user can contribute to it!

Storing over 4.6 million products permanently in the database would take too much storage space and slow the site down. That's why RestinCal works through a smart interface: products are fetched and saved only when they're actually needed. This way we avoid outdated or discontinued product data, keeping the food database up to date, clean and, above all, pleasant to use!

Manufacturers change recipes and typing errors happen, so products may contain errors or omissions. Check the package whenever accuracy matters. For basic-food comparisons, you can also use the Fineli database maintained by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare.

The site maintainer is not responsible for any errors in the food database products.

What is the food database?

The food database is a directory where you can find the calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat and other nutrition values of foods. You can search for a product by name or scan the barcode on the package, and the nutrition data goes straight into your tracking. The database is designed with Finnish use in mind, so it includes local basics, supermarket ranges and familiar brands. Everything is free, and you can browse the database without signing in.

Where does the nutrition data come from?

The data comes from nutrition references for basic foods, manufacturer labels and products added by users. The database can therefore contain incomplete or outdated information. Check the package whenever accuracy matters. For basic-food comparisons, you can also use the Fineli database maintained by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare.

How do I search for a food?

Type a product name into the search box, for example oats, chicken or banana, and pick the closest result. If you have the product in hand, the fastest way is to scan the barcode. You can add a food you find straight to your diary by choosing a portion size. If a product is not there yet, you can add it yourself, and it becomes available to others at the same time.
