Why I built a nicotine calculator

People talk surprisingly little about what nicotine actually costs. Most of us know cigarettes are expensive, but few stop to really add up where that money disappears over the years. And once you switch from cigarettes to nicotine pouches or snus, it is easy to think "this doesn't cost that much". I wanted to build a simple tool that shows the truth in black and white. You can see the cost of your own usage per day, per year, and when you look at the sum five, ten or even forty years down the line.

How does the nicotine calculator work?

I made it as easy to use as possible. You pick the product, meaning nicotine pouches, snus or cigarettes. Then you say how many packs or tins you go through and what a pack costs. The calculator instantly shows the daily, monthly and yearly cost. With the years slider you can see how big a sum builds up over a longer period and what that money could actually have bought. Nothing needs to be registered and there is no sign-in, the calculator works right away and is completely free. Whether you use it as a nicotine pouch calculator, a snus calculator or a cigarette calculator, the same tool handles all three.

How much does nicotine really cost?

Let's take an example. If you smoke about half a pack a day and a pack costs a bit over ten euros, the yearly cost is easily a couple of thousand euros. Someone who goes through a tin of nicotine pouches a day reaches the same numbers. It does not sound wild on any single day, but when the same thing repeats every single day year after year, the sum grows large. Over ten years we are often talking about tens of thousands of euros. That is exactly why I wanted the longer-term view in the calculator. A single purchase feels small, but the total opens your eyes.

Nicotine pouches and snus are not as cheap as you'd think

Many people switch from cigarettes to nicotine pouches or snus partly because it feels cheaper. In reality the difference is nowhere near as big as people imagine, if the amount used stays the same. A tin a day is a tin a day, and over a year it costs about the same as many smokers spend. That is why I built the calculator so you can compare all three with the same logic. Once you see your own number, it is easier to draw conclusions. Quitting nicotine pouches or quitting snus brings your wallet just as big a saving as quitting cigarettes.

Where could that money go?

This is, to me, the most motivating part. The calculator turns the cost into buying power, meaning it shows what your savings could have bought. In a few years you build up enough for a good holiday or a quality bike. Over a longer stretch we are talking about a used car, a newer car, or even a deposit on a home. When your own nicotine spend turns into a concrete object or experience, many people get the spark that a plain sum of money never gives them. And if you decide to quit one day, that same money stays with you. You could put it toward healthier choices. Here at RestinCal we build free calorie and weight tracking, so there is a good use for those savings right under the same roof.

Starting to quit pays off for your wallet too

I don't want to preach to anyone. Everyone knows their own situation best. But if you have ever even thought about quitting, this calculator gives you one very concrete reason to set alongside it. The savings start building from the very first nicotine-free day, and they keep growing. Many people keep the savings figure on their phone as a reminder of why it is worth carrying on. This page is meant for exactly that, as an incentive and a tool to help you start quitting.

Where can you get help with quitting?

If you are considering quitting or have already started, help is available for free from reliable sources. The WHO offers global guidance and a quit-tobacco toolkit. In the United States, the CDC provides free quit resources and quitline numbers. In the UK, the NHS has a step-by-step plan and support to stop smoking. These are well worth exploring, because the right support makes quitting considerably easier. This page is specifically a tool, not a healthcare service, so for any health-related questions always turn to a professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is the nicotine calculator free?
Yes. The calculator is completely free and needs no sign-up. You can use it as many times as you like.

Can it calculate the cost of snus or cigarettes?
Yes. The same calculator works as a snus calculator, a nicotine pouch calculator and a cigarette calculator. Just pick your product and enter your own usage.

Are the numbers accurate?
The numbers are estimates based on the prices and usage you enter. They give a good overall picture, but the exact amount depends on your own purchases, of course.
